Al-Qa'ida Central's media outlet, the Al-Sahab (The Clouds) Media Foundation, has released the full audio (with English subtitles) of a message released to the Al-Jazeera satellite television network in late January, "The Way to Save the Earth." In the message, AQC chief Usama bin Laden (Osama bin Laden) waxes poetic about global warming. His solution is simple: boycott the United States, do not loan them money to continue its wars, and reform society, the decay of which always precedes climate decline (he says).
Although it's not the first time he's mentioned global warming, this latest audio message is the latest attempt by Bin Laden to latch on to a popular issue in an attempt to get some traction out of it for his outfit. AQC has of late also renewed its focus on the plight of the Palestinian people living under Israeli military occupation, a popular cause throughout the world, not just in the Arab and Muslim worlds.
AQC's interest in the latter reeks of opportunism, particularly considering that its leaders and ideologues, such as Ayman al-Zawahiri and Abu Yahya al-Libi, seem to be more interested in seeing the formation of an "Islamic emirate" in the occupied Palestinian Territories under takfiri extremists like 'Abd al-Latif Musa, the late spiritual guide of the Gaza-based jihadi-takfiri group Jund Ansar Allah who was killed in August 2009 (he's more commonly referred to by his nom de guerre, Abu'l Nur al-Maqdisi), than in seeing the Palestinians achieve statehood. Indeed, nationalism is a "modern idol," as AQC's "mufti" (jurist) Abu Yahya al-Libi reminded us in an August 2009 video produced by Al-Sahab.
A quick note on the title of this post: I actually think taking care of the planet, since, you know, we kind of live here, is a good idea. And burning a whole bunch of stuff and polluting land and water doesn't seem like it would help the planet, or us, in the long run, I don't know why. However, I could not resist referencing the Keeper of the Lockbox's famous book. Predictably, some far right-wing ideologues have used Bin Laden's latest drivel to try and score exceedingly cheap political points. Such is the level, or lack thereof, of their character.
The full audio message is embedded below via my BlipTV account, which has been of great use in blogging. Highlights of some of the main points are contained within the stills scattered throughout this post.
Also interesting (at least to me) was the return of an old-school Al-Sahab intro segment, with the neon blue "company" logo segment with the late "shaykh of the slaughterers" Abu Mus'ab al-Zarqawi reciting a Qur'anic verse. He was the founder of the bloodthirsty Jama'at al-Tawhid wa'l Jihad (Group of Absolute Monotheism & Struggle) which morphed into Al-Qa'ida in the Land of the Two Rivers/Iraq (AQI) in the autumn of 2004. He was killed in a United States airstrike in June 2006, though his death did not break AQI. The same audio clip of al-Zarqawi is used to begin AQC's Wind of Paradise video series in which it documents the lives and "achievements" of its Afghanistan/Pakistan "martyrs."
